Rays Over Jays, 5-3

Wednesday afternoon, the Rays wrapped up Spring Training 2011 with a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at Tropicana Field. B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria led Tampa Bay to its 15th win of the spring as the Rays finished with a 15-14 record overall.

Both starting pitchers went four innings. Jeff Niemann allowed four runs on three hits, with a walk and two strikeouts. Toronto’s Jo-Jo Reyes allowed two runs on one hit, one walk, and six strikeouts.

Evan Longoria opened up the scoring in the first inning with a solo homer to give the Rays the lead, but Toronto picked up three runs in the third inning on an RBI single from Jose Bautista and a two-run RBI double by Adam Lind. The Rays pulled within one in the bottom half of the inning when B.J. Upton stole two bases – including home. Jays 3, Rays 2.

Elliot Johnson knotted the score at three with a left-field solo shot in the bottom of the fifth. Rays 3, Jays 3.

B.J. Upton continued to add to his solid day – knocking a two-run RBI double that gave the Rays the lead and the win. Rays 5, Jays 3.

The Rays have Thursday off and will open up their season on Friday at Tropicana Field. They will be hosting the Baltimore Orioles as David Price opposes Baltimore’s Jeremy Guthrie.
